The Castle in the 11 the century

Hangthwaite Castle is an 11th century earthwork motte and bailey fortress, founded by Nigel Fozzard. The motte, encased by a wide wet ditch, defends a bean-shaped eastern bailey and a small north-western mound, which is possibly a barbican


Where the castle is?

Hangthwaite Castle is located south-east of Adwick-le-Street, off the Great North Road. 4 miles north of Doncaster, on the A638.The site is visible from a public footpath, which passes the castle from the road.

The Return Path

This is the  return  path  from the bailey and the motte.The outer surface of the mound could be covered with clay or strengthened with wooden supports. Bigger castles might have two mottes this was rare of the time period.


Mote

This is the remains of the mote at the castle the image is form inside the mote .They would have added water in the 11th century and if you go on a rainy day the mote is half filled with water.
